Map to the star

Design and realization of the photobook Map to the star by Mirko Viglino.

This book, through the metaphor of a journey through space, tells about the relationship between a separated father and his daughter. Mirko and Anita share the passion for space, and spend an endless amount of time staring at the night sky, studying together the solar system or assembling rockets and satellite models. Building their relationship has been a journey through the unknown, a search for a new world, their own. The book design is inspired, right from the cover, by the imagery of space expeditions, by the footprint of the first man on the moon.

The set-up is characterized by the use of paper as a surface capable of affecting our sensations, sometimes by altering the vision of the image, which merges with the following one, and at other times by making the image mysterious and visible only against the light. The book, in a limited edition of 100 copies out of the 250 printed, is contained in an aluminum bag, like those used by astronauts to store their food. Inside, there is a limited edition photograph and a poster with all the elements that Anita carried in her journey through space. And Anita’s is also the writing used to design the book’s title: Map to the star.
